| Description | HANNIBAL, MO - "Old Hannibal", born a slave, was one of the local characters. Born with withered legs, he was strong in his arms and upper body and when not using his mule drawn, two wheeled cart for locomotion, he made good speed through "the use of a leather seat on his pants and clasping iron pieces in his hands" ("A History of Marion County" by Kate Ray Kuhn). One interesting aspect of this picture is the lady on the left with the camera on a tripod. This was Anna Schneizlein, a local photographer, taking a picture of "Old Hannibal". |
