Description |
HANNIBAL,
MO - Nellie Smith (aka "Cocaine Nell"), Mr. Taylor and
Fannie Briscoe (from left to right) sit in front of the Huck Finn home
at 213 North Street. The picture was taken from the alley side of the
home. The only information on Mr. Taylor is that he
was deaf and mute. Fannie was a former slave of the Briscoe family of Ralls
County. Nellie Smith was a local character who was "frequently in
the police court for drunkenness or peace disturbance, but no serious
charges were ever preferred against her. She was known by nearly
every body in Hannibal and was seldom ever seen on the streets without a
basket on her arm. Just what she carried in that basket no one
could ever find out, but many took it for granted that it was a
revolver." (Hannibal Courier-Post, 6/11/11). Information on the
back of the photo states that Nell came from Palmyra to Hannibal about
1880. She died in 1911. Thanks to her friend Lottie Harris who
took up a collection for her burial, Nell was interred in the Baptist cemetery off Anna
Street, Hannibal. |
