HANNIBAL,
MO - Charles Henry McElroy, who passed away in 1954, (circular picture
in top middle of the article) was one of Hannibal's African American entrepreneurs. He was famous for his hot tamales.
The family business was actually founded by his father Henry Clay
McElroy, Sr. who walked around Hannibal offering his tamales and other
edibles for sale. This selling method was continued on by his
family. Charles Henry's granddaughter, Lillian Hawkins-Jones, is pictured on
the far left of the article. |
