Description |
HANNIBAL,
MO - The Douglasville community was named for Joe Douglas, a part
Indian man who lived in the 1000 block on Hill Street, and who acquired
property in the area by saving his meager earnings. The article recounts
the history of Douglasville School and earlier African American
education in Hannibal. Some interesting details such as excerpts
from the diary of an early teacher, Roxanne Delaney ("Annie"),
are included. Also included are several paragraphs about Blanche
Kelso Bruce who was briefly a teacher in Hannibal and later became
the first African American U. S. Senator (representing the state of
Mississippi). |
