| Title | Gravestone of Agness Flautleroy, a Marion County Slave |
| Date of Original | Unknown |
| Date of Digital | 16 February 2005 |
| Description | HANNIBAL, MO - The gravestone featured is the only pre-Civil War slave gravestone in the Old Baptist Cemetery. Agness Flautleroy was the slave of Sophia Hawkins and died in 1855. Sophia Hawkins was the mother of Laura Hawkins. Laura was the inspiration for the character of Becky Thatcher found in Mark Twain's book "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer". Laura herself was known to have owned a slave which leads to speculation as to the identity of the grave next to Agness's which is marked by a concrete stone of poor quality. On this stone is scratched the name, Petunia. Could this be the daughter of Agness Flautleroy? |
