DESCRIPTION |
ILASCO, MO - This picture, taken from the
Kisel's garden (members of the Church), shows the close proximity of the
church (left) and the school building (right). The church building
was constructed in 1911, the school building in 1917. At the top of
the Church's tower was the bell. Following the old country
traditions, the bell was wrung at 6 p.m. to announce the end of the work
day. In addition, whenever an Ilasco Slovak, whether Catholic or
Lutheran, passed away, the bell would be rung for five minutes to honor
the deceased. Electric lights were introduced to both buildings in
1932. The school, as such, was discontinued in 1942 and restarted
briefly in 1947-48. The Church's final service was April 25,
1971. Eventually both buildings were demolished. |
