DESCRIPTION |
ILASCO, MO - The Atlas Portland Cement
Company provided affordable housing for employees to rent. Since
many of them came from Europe with their families and belongings in tow,
housing that could accommodate these families was essential.
Pictured here is one example. This particular cottage in the LeBaume
Valley rented for $13.50 per month. Unfortunately, this was
too expensive for the unskilled laborers and generally was rented by the
more skilled laborers or management who were on a higher wage scale.
The child in the foreground is unidentified. |
