TITLE Limestone Quarry No. 5 (Left Side)
DATE OF ORIGINAL 1906-12-10
DATE OF DIGITAL 2006-2
DESCRIPTION THE PLANT - This is half of a picture of one of the shale quarries of the Atlas Portland Cement Company in its early years.  Removing this limestone required both dangerous and backbreaking work, from setting dynamite charges to swinging a sledgehammer for hours at a time.  Most of this work was performed by immigrant laborers from south central Europe living in the company town of Ilasco.  Although unidentified, several of these employees can be seen in the picture.  Also visible are some of the horse drawn wagons used to transport the limestone to the kiln and/or the rail lines..
