DESCRIPTION |
THE PLANT - This is half of a picture of
one of the shale quarries of the Atlas Portland Cement Company in its early
years. Removing this limestone required both dangerous and
backbreaking work, from setting dynamite charges to swinging a
sledgehammer for hours at a time. Most of this work was performed by
immigrant laborers from south central Europe living in the company town of Ilasco.
Although unidentified, several of these employees can be seen in the
picture. Also visible are some of the horse drawn wagons used to
transport the limestone to the kiln and/or the rail lines.. |
