DESCRIPTION |
THE PLANT - This is half of a picture of
one of the limestone quarries of the Atlas Portland Cement Plant in its
early years. Removing this limestone required not only
sledgehammers, pickaxes, etc. but it often took place at heights.
Most of this labor was performed by the immigrant laborers from Central
and Southern Europe residing in the company town of Ilasco. At the
base of the quarry can be seen one of the horse drawn carts used to
transport the limestone to the kiln and/or rail line. |
