DESCRIPTION |
THE PLANT - This is 1/4 of a picture of
one of the shale quarries of the Atlas Portland Cement Company in its early
years. This picture gives an excellent prospective as to the size of
the railcars used to transport the shale. On the platform in the
center are several horse drawn wagons. The horses would be
unhitched, and the wagons upended by the laborers (several pictured, but
none identified) to dump the shale into the railcars for transport.
The destination of the shale was the plant and once processed into cement,
the finished product would be placed in cars and transported by the
CB&Q Railroad (notice the name on the car at bottom right) to
widespread customers. Eventually cement from this plant would
be used to construct the Panama Canal and the Empire State Building. |
