| DESCRIPTION | THE PLANT - Pictured are Big Jack Scampoli on the packing machine (upper left), Theodore Polletti moving the hand truck, and Big Frank Gizzerli (back showing, wearing bib overalls) next to the chute. The young man carrying the bag is unidentified. Imagine how strong these men were considering each bag of cement weighed 94 pounds. The hand truck in the picture has 752 pounds on it. (In 1936 Scampoli and Gizzerli went into partnership and purchased the store/tavern in Ilasco, where rumor has it they sold not only the 3.2% beer allowed by Ralls County, but also some of their homemade dry Italian red wine. In 1938 Scampoli sold his half of the business to Gizzerli). |
