| DESCRIPTION | ILASCO, MO - These three unknown Ilasco residents are sitting in front of the pump which gave their company housing neighborhood its name. This pump was the only source of water for the families living in this part of the LeBaume Valley. In the background is one of the 16 houses of the neighborhood. It consisted of 2 rooms upstairs and 2 rooms downstairs just like all the other houses. This particular house also had a small fenced in area for the $7.00 a month rent. Not all of the houses did. This was the poorest of the company housing and the tenants left as soon as possible for better housing. This combined with the fact that no new immigrant labor was being imported meant that by the late 1920's these houses were vacant and were subsequently torn down in the early 1930's. |
