DESCRIPTION |
ILASCO, MO - This postcard depicts the
hard work involved in quarrying the stone needed for the production of
cement. In the bottom half of the picture workers are seen with
shovels and horse drawn carts to transport the stone to the plant.
The earth did not give up its stone easily. Dynamite often had to be used
first. This was a precarious process involving dynamite, lit, on a
long pole stuck into a drilled hole. Many were the workers who died
or were maimed during this process. |
