STILLWELL ADDITION (a.k.a. Monkey Run, a
suburb of Ilasco) - The first school in Monkey Run was held in the
basement of St. Peters Byzantine Catholic Church and operated from 1919 to
1925. In 1925 the church was disbanded and a new location for the
school was needed. In 1926 The Stillwell Addition Grade School
building was constructed as a one room building made of concrete
stucco. In addition to the main building, there were two concrete
stucco outhouses, one of which is visible in the picture. Water for
the school was provided by a deep well with a hand pump which was
dug specifically for the school . The school had one teacher who
taught grades 1 through 5. In 1935, the school was closed. The
people in the picture are unidentified. |
